Here's my weekly edition of Wednesday Wonderment (the first for this site :) ).

So often in life we find ourselves going along on autopilot and though our minds may wander, we may not realize what we wonder. So here’s a few of my “wonderments” (and a few from my kids):

I wonder if city folks realize how beautiful the country night sky is…

I wonder why 60 degrees in the summer is so much colder than 60 degrees in the winter…

I wonder how some people can believe in random chance when all around us there is evidence of creation…

And here’s a few from my kids:

I wonder why when I'm having fun, time flies by, but when I'm doing schoolwork, it's sooo slow…

I wonder why I'm so tired during the week but not on the weekends…

We wonder…

What do you wonder…

As members of the TOS Crew, we have once again, been blessed to review figurines from Schleich. Our previous review can be found here. We have been collecting Schleich figures for a long time, from the farm animals to the knights. The kids enjoy creating dioramas with them: deserts, farms, forests, etc. The pictures in this review offer a couple of the settings.

About Schleich GmbH: Friedrich Scleich founded this company 75 years ago in Germany. It is headquartered out of Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. But don't worry, you don't have to travel to Germany to buy these amazing toys :) but it would be fun! These products are sold in specialty shops, Target, Toys 'R Us, and Tractor Supply (TSC) Stores. You can also order them online.

What Are Schleich Toys: These "toys" are wonderful. According to Schleich's website, "each toy mould is precision engineered by a German master craftsman who works on the finest details for up to six weeks." SIX WEEKS! That is incredible. Then each item is hand painted, offering a unique toy for everyone. The products are "natural and accurate copies of the animals, people, historical periods and fantasy worlds they represent." This is absolutely true. Schleich also takes every effort to ensure safety of each product for your child (they are recommended for children ages 3 and up). This is a great added benefit. Take a look at some of these figures:
Schleich has over 500 items available at this time. There are 3 different categories of figurines created by Schleich with 7 sub-categories: World of Nature - Farm Life, Wild Life; World of History - The World of Knights, The World of the American Indians, Prehistorical Animals; World of Fantasy - Bayala, Smurfs.

What We Thought: As I said above, we have been collecting Schleich toys for awhile. The kids have many, many different figurines and add to their collections as often as possible. For holidays and birthdays, when asked, they even request gift cards to stores that sell them. My DD says, "I like that they are so unique, you can't find toys like this with such great quality. And there's such a variety." My DS says, "I  like the details of each animal: like the elephants wrinkles and the different animals eyes." I absolutely adore these toys. They're so cute :) And the larger accessories are really cool! Schleich toys are an incredible investment for your children. The quality and craftsmanship of each piece almost guarantees it will last a long time (barring any pet damage, lol).

How To Purchase: . You can find Schleich toys in many of your local stores.: Target, Toys 'R Us, or TSC Store. I have found that the prices start at $2.49 and up to $10.00 for individual figurines. There are bundled groups and accessories available for varied prices. I have also found the pricing to be consistent regardless of which store I purchase from. I am sure you won't be disappointed with your purchase!

I have had the pleasure of reviewing the book Vocabulary Cartoons: SAT Word Power  by New Monic Books. My first thought when looking at this book was "this is really neat" :)

This paperback book is designed for the student (typically 7th through 12th grade) that is studying for the SAT, PSAT, GRE, or even those just wanting to increase there vocabulary base. It offers an interesting technique for learning and retaining vocabulary words. Mnemonics have long been used by teachers & students to remember various things they are learning from the bones of the body to the presidents. Vocabulary Cartoons takes this fantastic technique and applies it to not so easy words.

From their website: "Students learn hundreds of SAT level words faster and easier with powerful rhyming and visual mnemonics. In independent school tests, students with Vocabulary Cartoons learned 72% more words than students with traditional rote memory study materials and had 90% retention. Contains 290 SAT words with 29 review quizzes consisting of matching and fill-in-the-blank problems."

Our take on it: since my 14y.o. daughter LOVES the dictionary, she really liked this book. She also just started 11th grade & needs to practice/study for the SAT. This book offers her a fun & interesting way to learn new words. The technique will, hopefully, help her remember the words, too. Vocabulary Cartoons did catch the attention of my 10y.o. son, too. Though he just began 5th grade, it's never too early to learn for the SAT.

You can purchase Vocabulary Cartoons for just $12.95. As is noted above, inside this book there are 290 words that your student can have fun learning!

Vocabulary Cartoons is offered by New Monic Books, from Punta Gorda, Florida. You can contact them via their website or by calling toll free at 800-741-1295. You can find many other resources on their site, as well. They offer books for grades K-12 that are "designed to enhance the learning process with powerful mnemonic devices" (vocabularycartoons.com).

”With understanding comes confidence, and confidence is 100% the name of the game in math and science” ~ Jason Gibson

As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I have had the pleasure of reviewing The Pre-Algebra Tutor Volume I & The TI-83/TI-84 Calculator Tutor Instructional DVD's by Math Tutor DVD. My review will be written in two separate parts: each dedicated to one of the DVD's.

MathTutorDVD.com is the home of instructional videos created by Jason Gibson. Mr. Gibson has a heart for teaching students and to make 'seemingly complex topics suddenly easy to students' (mathtutordvd.com). He is a brilliant individual with an extensive education including a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering AND a Masters of Science in Physics. He has even worked for NASA, leaving only to focus his time on Math Tutor DVD.Through his video's a student can learn invaluable lessons in math, physics, and probability & statistics.

The PRE-ALGEBRA TUTOR Vol. I

This is a 2 DVD set that offers 5 hours of tutorial instruction on pre-algebra. The instructor is Jason Gibson. As stated above, he seeks to take a complex subject and break it down so anyone can understand it. He does just that in these pre-algebra DVD's. Starting from the basics of the subject, he teaches the student how to perform each concept and gradually builds upon that knowledge until the student achieves the most difficult aspect of the subject. By watching the DVD's, the student will watch and listen as Mr. Gibson describes, in detail, each concept by narrating a problem as he writes it out on a white board. By using the method of teaching, the student has an opportunity to work through the problem along with Mr. Gibson.

Watching these video lessons, your student will learn:
    Real Numbers
    The Number Line
Greater Than, Less Than, Equal To
    Absolute Value and Adding Integers
    Subtracting Integers
    Multiplying Integers
    Dividing Integers
    Powers and Exponents
    Order of Operations
For just $26.99, you can purchase the DVD set now. That’s a 23% savings from the regular price. You can preview the video’s here

The TI-83/TI-84 Calculator Tutor

This is a 3 DVD set that offers 8 hours of tutorial instruction on the Texas Instruments TI-83 & TI-84 graphing calculators. In these videos, Mr. Gibson teaches “all the major functions” of these 2 calculators. Again, by watching the DVD's, the student will watch, listen, and do as Mr. Gibson describes, in detail,  the functions of the calculator. The student will actually see a large size calculator on the screen with a mouse pointing to which function key is being discussed. This is very helpful to be able to see & hear what is being taught, rather than guessing at which/what is being pointed to.

Watching these video lessons, your student will view 37 different sections from overview of the calculator to calculating savings and investments.

For just $26.99, you can purchase the DVD set & have them for anytime use at home. That’s a 16% savings from their regular price. You can also see a preview of each of the individual lessons here

Our take on the DVD's: The videos aren’t fancy to look at; there is no frill. But they’re also not full of distracting colors or movements (Mr. Gibson typically is standing in front of a whiteboard). My daughter even asked 'is this what it's like in public school?' :)

But there really is an enormous amount of information in each of the lessons & you will not go wrong in offering this to your student in need of tutoring.

All of MathTutorDVD tutorial videos come with a money back guarantee: 'raise grades or your money back'!

The price is right compared to in person tutoring; and there's even a pause button. ;)
